When joining two ends of flat webbing, the water knot
is a popular choice. It has the advantage of simplic-
ity and reasonably good security. This has long been
used by climbers to create loops of webbing that can
be untied. I say “reasonably good” because, in some
types of webbing, the water knot is prone to loosen-
ing when you aren’t looking. Sometimes people will
stitch or tape the working ends to the standing part
but, again, there are better alternatives.
1. start by tying an overhand knot in one working end of web-
bing, making sure the webbing is arranged to allow the knot to
lie flat if pressed.
