dOuBLe FIshermAn’s KnOT
Here is the master joining knot for cordage of simi-
lar diameter. The double fisherman’s is the one to tie
whenever you do not want things to come untied.
It can be used on thin cord, heavy rope, or web-
bing. Once this knot has been tightened down, it is
extremely difficult to untie!
Also known as the grapevine knot, this offers
superior security in most situations because the
knots tighten and jam against one another when
loaded. If less security is required, say for a flashlight
lanyard, then a single overhand knot may be used.
And when maximal security is required, particularly
with slippery rope, then triple overhands can be tied.
1. start with one working end and tie a double overhand knot by
adding an extra wrap around the standing part of the rope.
2. Thread the other working end through the loops of the double
overhand.
