Castor Oil
Cathartic effects (excessive fluid and electrolyte loss) leading to dehydration. It is
mainly used to evacuate the GIT contents prior to GIT operations.
Warning: It shouldn't be used in pregnant women as it may cause premature labor.
It can erode intestinal villi or disorganize the microvillous surface of the intestinal
lumen so long term use leads to nutrient malabsorption.
Dose: Adult: 15-60 ml; Children (2-12 years) 5-15ml
Castor oil can be misused to hasten delivery to induce premature uterine
contractions; however this is deadly since it can cause amniotic fluid embolism and
impaired health of the infant.
