Eyelid disorders

Contact Dermatitis of the Eyelid

What it is?

A skin reaction to (allergen) or irritation (irritant) caused by contact with a specific substance.
The involvement of both eyelids suggests allergy because such reactions typically follow general exposure
rather than localized irritation.

Symptoms:

A red, itchy, and often swollen rash on the eyelids and surrounding skin.

Causes:

Often due to contact with allergens in makeup (like mascara), adverse effects of eye medications as eye drops,
or other substances the skin is sensitive to.

General Treatment approach of Contact Dermatitis of the Eyelid

Questioning the patient about the use of eye medications or new personal care products (e.g., eyeliner, eye
shadow) may help identify the offending substance quickly.
Discontinuing use of the suspected product is the best treatment strategy.
If swelling of the eyelid is marked, nonprescription oral antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine) along with
application of cold compresses 3–4 times per day will help reduce the inflammation and itching.
Consult an eye care specialist if symptoms persist after 72 hours of use of oral antihistamines.

Eyelid disorders required medical referral

1. Blepharitis is a general term for eyelid inflammation with symptoms like redness, crusting, and irritation.
Blepharitis can be caused by factors like bacteria, blocked oil glands, or underlying skin conditions such
as seborrheic dermatitis and rosacea.

2. Stye (Hordeolum)
Cause: Bacterial infection (usually staphylococcal) of an eyelash follicle or, less commonly, a deep oil
gland.

Appearance: A red, tender, painful lump that develops quickly, often with a visible yellow pus-filled
head near the edge of the eyelid.

Symptoms: Pain, tenderness, and swelling.
