Kinetics of fructose metabolism
– The rate of fructose metabolism is more rapid than
that of glucose because trioses formed from F-1-P
bypass two regulatory reactions of glycolysis.
Therefore, ingestion of large quantities of fructose
increases the production of acetyl-CoA (building block
of fatty acids & cholesterol) thus increasing the
synthesis of triglycerides & cholesterol, which leads to
hyperlipidemia.
– The transport of fructose into the cells is not insulin-
dependent, and fructokinase is not affected by the
deficiency of insulin; therefore, fructose is given
instead of glucose in diabetic patients.
