3. Saponin .
Uses:
Uses supported by clinical data
• A syrup made from the roots is used as an emetic, to empty the stomach in
cases of poison ingestion
• Expectorant, diaphoretic
• Treatment of amoebic dysentery: emetine HCl is given by injection ,and
emetine + Bisthmus iodide by mouth.
• It is of no benefit in case of bacillary dysentery.
Preparations:
Dover’s powder: consists of standard powder ipecac (one part) + powder Opium
(one part) + powder lactose ( 8 parts )
✓ Used as diaphoretic in cases of fever
✓ opium causes dilatation of blood vessels ( increase the effect)
Standardised Ipecacuanha Liquid Extract
It contains 1.80% to 2.20% of total alkaloids, The extract is produced
from the herbal drug and ethanol (60 to 80 per cent V/V). calculated as
emetine used as expectorant in cough mixtures in dose 0.06 ml ; the
emetic dose is 0.5 ml.
The tincture
is produced from the herbal drug and ethanol (70 per cent V/V) Contains
0.18 per cent (m/m) to 0.22 per cent (m/m) of total alkaloids, calculated as
emetine.
