Subterranean stems containing volatile oils
1. Ginger (zingiber) ‫الزنجبيل‬

Constituents: homologues
• Essential oil: (responsible for aroma)
• zingiberene (major); andβ-Bisabolene zingiberol.
• Oleo–resin: (responsible for pungent taste):
• Gingerol homologues (major, 33%), shogaol

(dehydration products of gingerols), zingerone (degradation

product of gingerols).
• Zingerone and shogaols are found in small amounts in fresh ginger

and in larger amounts in dried or extracted products.

Uses supported by clinical data
Prophylaxis of nausea and vomiting
(motion sickness, postoperative nausea, vomiting in pregnancy, seasickness).
