Antioxidant

Principle

Presence of free radicals or anions in the body may lead to damage of the cells
e.g. lipid peroxidation. This may lead further to the induction of tumor and
hepatotoxicity.

Mechanism of action

           1. Free radical scavenging.
           2. Inhibit lipid peroxidation.
           3. Increase the activity of Anti-oxidant enzymes e.g. catalase,

               glutathione peroxidase & superoxide dismutase(2003)
           4. Inhibit oxidative neuronal cell damage & apoptosis.

Antitumor

Mechanism of action

           1. Immunostimulation
           2. Inhibition of:

                   ➢ DNA synthesis.
                   ➢ DNA topoisomerase.
                   ➢ Hyperoxide production.

Antihypertensive

Mechanism of action

           1. Direct vasodilatation.
           2. Decrease plasma noradrenaline.
           3. Decrease thickness of aortic wall.
           4. Decrease myocardial fibrosis.
           5. Increase NO synthase activity.
           6. ACE inhibitor.

                                                                  124
