What is a PEF, and what is its role in the
management of an asthmatic patient?
• The PEF is the highest flow achieved from a maximum
forced expiratory manoeuvre started without hesitation
from a position of maximal lung inflation.
• Changes in PEF are an important indicator of an
asthmatic patient’s clinical status and as such are a key
element of any asthma action plan
