Fate of topically delivered drugs
Noncorneal, productive ocular absorption
• This pathway is minor compared with the transcorneal route.
• It can deliver drug to the aqueous humor via penetration through the
conjunctiva and underlying sclera.
• It is particularly important for drugs with low corneal permeability:
hydrophilic compounds and large molecules (like protein and
peptides).
