Ophthalmic DD: requirements

  In practice
  • The external eye can tolerate tonicity variations.
  • The isotonicity limits of an ophthalmic preparation in terms of sodium

     chloride range from 0.6% to 2% (200 to 400 mOsm) without marked
     discomfort to the eye.
  • In certain cases, hypotonic products (for dry eye) or hypertonic
     products (for corneal edema) are used.
