Ophthalmic DD: requirements

    Buffering considerations:
    • Buffer capacity is the key for pH compromise.
    • Buffer capacity should be adequate for stability but minimized, to

       allow for the rapid neutralization of the instilled drop and thus
       minimal irritation and reflex tearing.
    • Formulations that target the extremes of the acceptable pH range
       (like corticosteroids acidic suspensions) will have better patient
       acceptability if the formulations have a low buffering capacity.
