Ophthalmic DD: containers

  • A few commercial ophthalmic liquid preparations are packaged in
small glass bottles with separate glass or plastic droppers

  • Most are packaged in soft plastic containers with a fixed built-in
dropper. This type of packaging is preferred both to facilitate
administration and to protect the product from external contamination.

  • Ophthalmic solutions used as eyewashes are generally packaged with
an eye cup, which should be cleaned and dried thoroughly before and
      after each use.

• Additives in the polymer plastic which may interact with formulation
components through adsorption (e.g., binding of preservatives and

• The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommended to
the FDA that a uniform color-coding system be established for the
caps and labels of all topical ocular medications. This helps prevent
errors in medication and improve patient compliance.
