It has been used for the treatment of polycythemia vera ( too
many red blood cells produced by the bone marrow) & & chronic
granulocytic or myeloid leukemia ( too many blood cells produced
by the bone marrow ).At relatively high doses ( 1.5-5 mCi) , 32P
accumulate in the bone marrow & can suppress the production of
blood cells.
5-Yttrium (90 Y ) , has great affinity to chelating agents ,which can
be used for targeting carriers .It can chelate with pentetic acid
(DTPA).,
Can be used for localization of lymphatics &Its chelate with EDTA
Can lead to localization in the bone.
6-Iodine ( 131 I ), used as water soluble salt,sod. Iodide , used for
the treatment of goiter,Grave’s disease ,& thyroid cancer .
It is selectively taken up by the thyroid gland in the neck .It can
cause localized tissue destruction by radiation produced within
the gland.Targed uptake by select tissue can be achieved by
incorporation into compounds such as (m IBG) which is selectively
Taken up by the adrenal medullary tissues & can be used to treat
carcinomas of or metastases from the adrenal medullary glands.
Nonradioactive Pharmaceutical Use In Nuclear Medicine
Interventional pharmaceutical drugs alter the physiologic process
being studied with radiopharmaceuticals. When they are used in
conjunction with nuclear medicine, the amount of information is
greatly improved. They improve the information about the
process under study & may increase the specificity & sensitivity of
the procedure or decrease the time necessary for imaging.e.g.
Acetazolamide ,Cimetidine, Dipyridamole, Furosemide, V. B12.
