Discovery of Benzene

Benzene was discovered in 1825 and was found to possess molecular formula C6H6 (CnH2n-6).
     ➢ It’s a highly unsaturated compound.
➢ Benzene was recognized as being the parent compound of aromatic compounds.
➢ It was expected that it reacts like alkenes, but it was found to react in a completely different

        manner from olefins.

It reacted in presence of FeBr3

Many substituted benzenes are found in nature.

Many other physiologically active substituted benzenes are synthesized. In fact, more than two-
thirds of the top 400 brand name and generic drugs contain a benzene ring.
