Stage 2: Conversion of mevalonate to
two activated isoprenes
In this next stage, three phosphate
groups are transferred from three
ATP molecules to mevalonate. The
phosphate attached to the C-3
hydroxyl group will leave and
produce a double bond in the 5
carbon product.
The two isoprenes are Δ3-isopentenyl
pyrophosphate and dimethylallyl
pyrophosphate
