Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
Occurrence:
(1) Synthetically.
(2) By extraction from plant materials e.g. citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes.
Uses:
1- Vitamin C is essential for the normal functioning of living cells and is involved in
many enzyme reactions.
2- It is required for the development of cartilage, teeth and bones, wound healing and
for aiding the absorption of iron from the intestine.
3- The reducing and associated antioxidant properties of vitamin C are utilized in the
food industry and in the formulation of some pharmaceuticals.
Some Synthetic Glucose Derivatives
In contrast to the above classes, there are a relatively small number of
synthetic carbohydrate drugs.
Aurothioglucose and a Auranofin are two examples of gold derivatives of
glucose.
