4. Resin alcohol (resinol): alcoholic compound with high mol. wt. e.g.
benzoresinol in benzoin & storesinol in storax.
5. Resin phenol (resino tannols): contains phenol group e.g. peru-
resinotannol in peru balsam & tolu-resinotannol in tolu balsam &
siaresinotannol in benzoin
• They are, in general, secretions of plant tissues, either:
a- Normal (natural). b- Pathological.
They are classified into:
1. Resin: e.g. Colophony.
2. Oleo-resin: volatile oil + resin: e.g. Mastic.
3. Oleo-gum-resin: volatile oil + gum + resin: e.g. Myrrh and
Olibanum.
4. Balsams: e.g. Benzoin
5. Glycoresins: resins when get combined with sugars by
glycosylation e.g. Convolvulaceae family drugs
A.Resins:
1. Colophony (Rosin)
Definition: Colophony is the solid resin left after distilling the volatile oil from
the oleo-resin obtained from Pinus palustris, P. toeda and other species of
Pinus, family Pinaceae.
Description:
- Rosin is typically a pale yellow, transparent, glassy solid, brittle and friable,
with a faint piny odor.
