Intended Learning Outcomes of the course (ILOs):
a. Knowledge & understanding
a1- Know physico-chemical properties of plant active constituents (such
as volatile oils, carbohydrates, bitter principles, resins, resin combinations
and tannins).
a2- Understand principles of analytical methods for qualitative and
quantitative determination of plant active constituents.
a3- Know principles and applications of phytochemistry in synthesis,
isolation, purification and identification of plant active constituents.
a4- Understand pharmacological properties of plant active constituents
including therapeutic uses, mechanism of action, dosage, adverse
reactions, contraindications and drug interactions.
a5- Understand the basis of phytochemical screening of medicinal plants
for their active constituents.
b. Intellectual skills
b1- Apply extraction processes to materials found in nature and resolving
these extracts into their constituents.
b1- Handle and dispose of chemicals in a manner of ensuring safety of
individuals and environment.
c. Professional and Practical Skills
c1- Use pharmaceutical and medical terms and abbreviations correctly in
different professional settings.
c2- Comprehend, identify and evaluate the chemical constituents (such
as volatile oils, carbohydrates, resins, resin combinations and tannins) of
crude drugs.
c3- Carry out extraction, isolation and purification of plant active
constituents according to good laboratory and manufacturing practice.
c4- Handle equipment required in various phytochemical experiments.
c5- Use library, electronic and online resources to make an assignment,
perform a presentation on a suitable clear way.

d1- Work effectively as individuals and within a team.
d2- Follow ethical, legal and safety guidelines in all practice settings.
