• An instrument used to make absorbance or transmittance measurements is

known as a spectrophotometer.
• The spectrophotometer usually consists of five basic components:

1- Source of light (polychromatic radiation)
2- Wavelength selector (monochromator)
3- Sample compartment (cell or cuvette)
4- Detector
5- Recorder (meter)
