Lesson 2: What Does the Word “Sikh” Mean?

The word “Sikh” means student, a special kind of student.

Sikhs are students who learn teachings of special teachers

called Guru Sahib. Guru Nanak was our first Guru and Guru

Granth Sahib Ji is our Guru now.

Sikhs also look unique. The boys

have a jooda on their heads and the

girls can have their long hair in

                                                    braids or jooda.

The men and some women have

turban or dastar on their heads and

many women have chunni on their

                                                    heads.

Sikhs believe in one Waheguru who
is created veryone, who takes care of everyone and

everything. Sikhs remember Waheguru every day. Sikhs

learn to become a good people from their Gurus.

A good person learns to help others. A good person knows

the difference between good and bad. A good person

chooses to do good things, even when no one is watching.

Many times bad choices may seem more interesting and

easier, but we must choose the right thing to do.

Then we will be the real Sikhs.
