Lesson 4: What does the Word “Guru” mean?

Guru means teacher. A teacher is someone who

teaches us good things. For example, you have

teachers in school who teach you English and Math.

You have teachers in the Gurdwara school who teach

you Punjabi and Paath.

But a Sikh Guru is a special kind of teacher, a teacher

who shows us a good way to live life.

Guru Nanak was our first Guru. He was born in 1469.

Even when he was a little boy, he loved God and he

remembered God all the time.

He taught us that we should be good people. What are

somethings a good person does?

1. A good person speaks truth. He or she does not tell

a lie.

2. A good person works hard. He or she is not lazy. A

good person shares with others. He or she is not

greedy.

3. And a good person remembers that God made all

things and all people. So he or she does not hurt

anyone or anything.
