Lesson 16: Good Name with Good Deeds

Guru Nanak Dev Ji Meets Sajjan Thugg

Once, Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Bhai Mardana Ji went to Tulambha village.

That village is now in Pakistan. There lived a very wealthy man. His name
was Sajjan (friend). He had a big mansion. He had built a mosque in one

corner of his mansion and a temple in the other. A mosque is the place of
prayer for Muslims and a temple is for the Hindus. He impressed the Hindu

and Muslim travelers in this way. He had also built a rest house in the
courtyard where the travelers could stay the night. He also had a well in a
             corner.

Sajjan dressed up like saints- all clean white clothes. He appeared to be a

religious minded person. Whenever travelers came, Sajjan would serve
them well; feed them and give them a clean bed to sleep. But when the

travelers fell asleep, Sajjan would have the tavellers killed and thrown in
the well and keep all their belongings. Thus he gathered a lot of wealth.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji wanted to stop people like Sajjan from unethical deeds.
He wanted to teach them a good way of life. That is why he went to
Sajjan’s house. Sajjan saw the divine light on Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s face. He

thought that Guru Ji might be a wealthy man. He served Guru Ji and Bhai
Mardana Ji well. He started talking to them. Guru Ji asked him his name.

“Ji my name is Sajjan. I am everyone’s friend. To me Hindus and Muslims
are the same. I serve everyone.”

Guru Ji pierced him with his eyes and said, “Your name is Sajjan, do you
also act like a sajjan?” Sajjan was taken aback, but he said nothing.

Then night fell and he asked Guru Ji to go to sleep. He was waiting for the
moment to rob him. Guru Ji said, “Sajjana, we will sleep, but first we are

             going to say a Shabad.”

Sajjan said, “Ji you must say it.”

Guru Ji asked Bhai Mardana Ji to play the rabab and he uttered a Shabad

that meant that outside appearance does not do much for you. You have to
be clean/good inside. You must do good actions, not just look good.
