Lesson 9: Akal Moorat Akwl mUriq
In Punjabi “kwl” refers to time durations. For example past time is
called BUq kwl. Present time is called vrqmwn kwl and future time are
called Biv~K kwl.
Akal Akwl means without any time duration.
Moorat mUriq refers to a shape or entity.
Akal Moorat means an entity without the effects of time or age.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji says that Waheguru is timeless. Waheguru is Akal.
When we say “Sat Sri Akal!” we are saying Waheguru is the True Being.
What does ‘Akal Moorat’ mean for us? How can we become timeless? How
can we not be affected by time? Well, our human bodies will be affected
by time. Time makes us grow up, grow old, grow sick, grow weak and
ultimately die. Our bodies can never be timeless.
Waheguru is like the ocean- vast, unending. We are like the bubbles in it.
We come from His existence, we exist for a short time and we merge in
Waheguru. We can be spiritually timeless. We can lose fear of death and
think of death as a Waheguru’s Hukam that is inevitable.
What can we learn from this concept of Akal Moorat? We are here for a
short time and we should do good deeds. We should live by the Three
Golden Rules of Kirat Karo, Naam Japo and Vand Chhako. Kirat will help us
feel happier and healthier. With Naam Japo, we will feel closer to
Waheguru and feel His protection. With Vand Chhako, we will make the
world around us a little better. All these actions will help us come closer to
“Akal Moorat”.
