Lesson 11: Saibhung sYBM
Guru Nanak Dev Ji says that Waheguru is Saibhung. That means He is self-
inspired. He does everything on His own. No one tells Waheguru what to do or to
make things better.
What does Saibhung mean for us? How can the concept of ‘Saibhung’ make us a
better person?
If we can follow the word ‘Saibhung’ in our life, we will become inspired to work
on our own. No one will have to remind us to do our homework or help mother,
father, brother, or sister. We would want to do what should be done.
Following the word ‘Saibhung’ would mean being a good person who wants to do
the best work possible and who wants to make things better for as many people
as possible.
One thing that is needed now the most is taking care of our environment. You
need to take care of the resources you use every day. Be inspired to conserve
energy, conserve water and protect the environment from the harms of plastics
and chemicals.
One simple example of conserving resources is that when you brush your teeth;
turn the faucet off when you are brushing. Only turn it on when you want to rinse
your mouth. Another one is, when you are in Langar Hall, and you see glasses full
of water, ask the Sevadaar to give you half glass of water if you think you cannot
finish the whole glass. That will conserve lots of water just in our Gurdwara. But
when you do that, do not expect anyone to notice the good work you did or to
reward you. Leave that up to Waheguru. You just do your job. Find ways to help
others. And you will be rewarded in time, in ways you can’t imagine. Have faith
and keep on doing well and good.
