Lesson 13: A Sikh
What does the word “Sikh” mean? ‘Sikh’ literally means a ‘seeker, a student, a
learner for life.’ The Sikhs are people who take guidance for life from the Ten
Sikh Gurus and the Gurbani in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. They believe in Guru
Granth Sahib as their Eternal Guru. They do not follow any other faith. A Sikh
believes in many principles:
1. There is only one God for all the peoples of the world.
2. Since one God created us all, we are all equal. Men-women, young-old, rich-
poor, black-white, brown-yellow, we are equal.
3. Sikhs should earn living by honest labor- Kirat Karni.
4. Sikhs need to remember God at all times- Naam Japna.
5. Sikhs need to share wealth and other resource with the needy - Vand
Chhakna.
6. Sikhs live the life of a householder, yet do selfless service (Seva).
7. Sikhs must be vigilant and defend life from the evil forces that live in our
mind such as anger, greed, attachment and ego.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji wanted his Sikhs to be Nirmal- without dirt, without impurities.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji wanted us to be Khalis or pure, without impurities. Both
wanted us to be amazing human beings.
