Ranald Paterson
A Life well lived
Phillipa Atkinson Clow, General Manager, WHA
I worked with Ranald during my years as
Secretariat of what was then the Beverage
Service Association.
He was instrumental in developing the barista
training and championing the BEV-E awards. He
was always passionate about the industry and
contributed hugely to its development with
both his time and expertise.
Martyn Herriott: the BSA
Gentleman. Mentor.
Great golfer and
dearest friend.
Les Mills, Chairman: Masteroast Coffee
Although I had rather lost touch with Ranald during the
last few years, I was very sad to hear of his passing.
I first met Ranald during the embryonic days of the BSA, a time when
several industry stalwarts recognised a need for an organisation to
represent the interests of the non-vending beverage trade.
I was greatly impressed by Ranald’s quiet but authoritive demeanour at that
formative time, which when combined with his extensive experience of the
industry, was crucial in galvanising and guiding the somewhat disparate group of
entrepeneurs into a cohesive executive cohort from whence the BSA was formed.
I shall always be extremely grateful that during my two years as chairman, I JANUARY/FEBRUARY. 2024 | ISSUE 34
was able to call on Ranald’s wise and generous advice and support.
Ranald Paterson was a man who truly epitomised
the epithet of Gentleman and one who leaves an
enduring impression on our industry.
