P. 8
NIM
Needed: 20 coins
The Bet: It's more like a challenge. With a pile of coins, you will challenge a spectator
to take turns removing 1, 2, or 3 coins at a time. The person who takes the last set of
coins wins.
Instructions: 1. Place 20 coins onto a table. Explain to your spectator that you will take
turns removing 1, 2, or 3 coins at a time.
2. Always have the spectator go first.
3. Based on how many coins they take on their first turn, you will then take an amount
that will add up to 4. For example: If the spectator takes 1 coin, you will then take 3. Or
if they take 2, you will take 2.
4. Eventually, you will be down to only having 4 coins left. The spectator then only has
the option of choosing up to 3 coins. You will then be taking the last coin and you win.
Date On A Coin
Needed: Random coins
The Bet: Tell your friend to pull out a random coin from their pocket or purse. Tell
them that to figure out who will pay for lunch, or a round of drinks, you bet them that
you can guess the date.
The How: 1. To see who is paying for a round of drinks or lunch, ask your friend to pull
out a random coin and cover it on the table. Or you can have them pull out 5 coins and
show you. Then, pick one randomly and place it on the table.
2. Say to your friend that if you can guess the date, then they pay for the round. If you
get it wrong, then you will pay for the round.
3. Tell them today’s date. You win!
4. If they protest, tell them that they should listen to details more, that it’s a good lesson
for them, and that sometimes education costs.
