Antidepressant Evaluation of Polysaccharides from a Chinese Herbal
Medicine Banxia-houpu Decoction
半夏 ban xia (pinellia tuber, 120 g) ; Pinellia ternata (Thunb.)
木兰属 mu lan shu (magnolia bark, 90 g) ; Magnolia officinalis Rehd. Et Wilson
茯苓 Fú Líng (hoelen, 120 g); Poria cocos Wolf.
紫苏 zi su (perilla herb, 60 g); Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton
姜 jiang (ginger rhizome, 90 g); Zingiber officinale Roscoe.
Banxia-houpu Decoction designed for the treatment of liver qi
stagnation and phlegm accumulation
Banxia-houpu decoction were active in animal models of
depression with comparable effects to known antidepressants.
The oral administration of the polysaccharides at a low dose
for 4 weeks resulted in a significant increase in the monoamine
neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and dopamine
(DA) levels in whole mouse brain
