News item text is a text which informs readers about events which are considered
newsworthy or important.
Purpose of news item
It is used to inform readers about events of the day which are considered newsworthy
or important
Generic Structure of News Item:
Main Event(s) / Newsworthy Event(s) : it recounts the event in summary form.
• Elaboration / Background Event (s): This part elaborates what happened, why,
when and where it happened.
• Resource of Information (Source) : This part states a citation from participants
in the form of either direct or indirect speech, it contains comments by
participants in,witnesses to and authorities expert on the event.
Language Features of News Item:
• Focusing on circumstances (using simple language in writing the text.
• Using saying verbs such as : said, informed, told, reported, confirmed
• Sometimes at the beginning of news, the scene is mentioned : Jakarta / London /
Bogor.
• Using Past tense in explaining news events. But if it is a fact that still happens
until now , we can use simple present tense.
• Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline.
• Using adverbs: time, place and manner.
• Uses of material process ( a process of doing or happening) to retell the events.
