The RESNET Cross Border Challenge is a
friendly competition between American and
Canadian home builders to determine just
how energy efficient builders can build. “I
challenged Steve Baden a long time ago, and
that’s how the Cross Border Challenge was
created,” says Gooden. “Our building codes in
Canada are aggressive: Our building code is at 52
and Canadian Energy Star is 45. So we are sort
of running out of ways to encourage builders
because of bar is so high already.”
There were nine builder awards presented
for this year’s competition; five were based on
having the lowest HERS score for their specific
category, sponsored by Power-Pipe; two were
special President’s awards based on a fleet of
HERS new home ratings, sponsored by Icynene;
and two were Net Zero awards including PV
