Pharm D- Clinical Pharmacy Program Third Level Pharmaceutical Microbiology& Antimicrobials (PM 502)
Introduction
Pharmaceutical microbiology is concerned with the study of
microorganisms associated with the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. The
primary goal of pharmaceutical microbiology is to prevent and control
microbial contamination during the manufacturing process, storage, and
distribution of pharmaceuticals. Other aspects of pharmaceutical
microbiology include the research and development of anti-infective
agents. Pharmaceutical microbiologists operate within both quality
assurance and quality control. They are engaged in laboratory testing and
environmental monitoring to support these activities.
This course covers methods to eliminate bacteria and control microbial
growth in pharmaceuticals and hospitals, including sterilization,
preservation, and antimicrobial agents. It also addresses microbial
resistance, the misuse of antibiotics, and testing for antimicrobial
effectiveness.
