                  Definitions

➢ Cleaning: the process of removing visible dirt, dust and other soils

from surfaces. Using water with detergents
Performed before sanitizing, disinfecting and sterilizing because it
improves the effectiveness of each process.

➢ Sanitization: Sanitizing refers to lowering the number of germs on a

               surface to a safe level.
Sanitizing is best for surfaces that
               - don't typically come into contact with hazardous bacteria,

               - shouldn't come into contact with powerful chemicals: cooking tools
(dishwashers), food prep surfaces, children’s toys.

➢ Disinfection: A process to destroy vegetative pathogens not
               endospores on inanimate objects

➢ Antiseptic: Disinfectants applied directly to living tissues (body
surface) thereby limiting or preventing the harmful results of

               infection.

➢ Sterilization: A process that destroys all viable microbes, including

               viruses and endospores.
