Definitions
➢ Cleaning: the process of removing visible dirt, dust and other soils
from surfaces. Using water with detergents
Performed before sanitizing, disinfecting and sterilizing because it
improves the effectiveness of each process.
➢ Sanitization: Sanitizing refers to lowering the number of germs on a
surface to a safe level.
Sanitizing is best for surfaces that
- don't typically come into contact with hazardous bacteria,
- shouldn't come into contact with powerful chemicals: cooking tools
(dishwashers), food prep surfaces, children’s toys.
➢ Disinfection: A process to destroy vegetative pathogens not
endospores on inanimate objects
➢ Antiseptic: Disinfectants applied directly to living tissues (body
surface) thereby limiting or preventing the harmful results of
infection.
➢ Sterilization: A process that destroys all viable microbes, including
viruses and endospores.
