Control of microbial contamination
The microbiological quality of drugs is necessary for their efficacy and the safety
of the patient
Therefore, control of microbes in drugs is essential, either by
➢ assuring absence of microbes in sterile drugs
➢ by controlling microbial bioburden to appropriate levels for nonsterile
drugs

Sterile compounded medications are Non-sterile medications include the
intended to be used as injections, production of solutions, suspensions,
infusions, or application to the eye ointments, creams, powders,
suppositories, capsules, and tablets.
