Environment
Cage
Decide where to put your cage. Indoor guinea pigs need a quiet area, kept at a
cool temperature between 15 and 20 degrees. Keep their cage away from
radiators and out of direct sunlight and drafts. Set up water bottles on the
cage and the guinea pig run area.
The cage should be as big as possible. Guinea pigs need a lot of space to run.
They also need a place to hide. Line their sleeping area with a deep bed of hay.
The cage should be lined with paper or fleece to absorb any urine. Some
people like to line the whole cage with hay, but you can also use fleece and
guinea pig-friendly wood chips.
Guinea-pig-proofing your home
Clear all electrical cords away from your guinea pig habitat. Move curtains out
the way and clear the area of house plants. Many houseplants are poisonous
to guinea pigs, so be sure to move all plants out of reach of the guinea pigs.
Always supervise your guinea pigs around other pets. They are easily
frightened and might get hurt by other animals. Other pets, such as rabbits,
might sometimes carry germs that are harmful to guinea pigs.
