Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this dissertation is to provide answers to the following, germane questions

that would arise out of the analytical study of contemporary Korean preaching: “What is a

methodology of preaching that would spawn renewal and revival in the contemporary Korean

church? What kind of style and communicative techniques need to be encouraged for the Korean

preachers who should preach in a changed context?”

                                           Research Methodology and Structure

Since this dissertation seeks to locate some corrections for contemporary Korean

preaching in light of the preaching of Jesus, this writer will first analyze Korean preaching in its

historical context and contemporary socio-cultural context. This research resorts to the surveys

                                                        18
done by the aforementioned homileticians, published books and articles, and this author’s

personal experiences of serving as pastor of a Korean church. Second, this author will

investigate the preaching of Jesus in terms of his methodology of preaching by researching the

Biblical materials, published books, articles, and dissertations. Following this, there will be a

review and comparative analysis of the dominant methodology of contemporary Korean

                       18
Even though there are some exceptions somewhere, the style of preaching in the Korean
preaching is very typical and almost identical whatever denominations it belongs to. Thus, there
is no specific Presbyterian preaching or Baptist preaching in terms of their style. The result of
another survey will be the same. This writer, therefore, decided to resort to the best two analyses
done in 1984 and 1999, that yielded the same result.
