Activity 1 Views of Solid Figures

jOb ective Draw views of solid figures based on cube constructions.

1. Textbook Instructions Activity 1 Views of Solid Figures

1. In this activity, students will put aside 1 . Use four cubes to make each figure on the left.
rhombus stickers and attempt to create views
of solid figures by drawing rhombi on a dot Then use nine identical rhombi to draw the view of the figure on the
board. Remind students what a rhombus is
and how it works to form a view of a three- dot board. What you need: Geo Cubes
dimensional object.
a.
1a.
Form the top of the structure by drawing b.
four rhombi in a diagonal row.
Form the side of the structure by
connecting another row of four rhombi to
the top row.
Draw a single rhombus in the front junction
of these two rows to complete the
structure.

2. Build Understanding

If students struggle with drawing the figures freehand without the use of tools like rhombus stickers, note a
few simple strategies.
1. Construct the figure one side at a time rather than one cube at a time.
2. Begin with the side of the structure with the simplest construction. Each of these figures has a top, a side

and a front. For example, in 1b, the side is the simplest.
3. Once a single side of the figure is entirely complete, connect the other sides to it, following the pattern

indicated by the solid figure itself.
