Main Idea
Overview
Main idea questions test your understanding of the overall topic or main idea of the listening passage.
For conversations, you may be asked about the main topic or the purpose of the conversation. The main
idea question is the first question after each listening passage.

What are the speakers mainly discussing? Why does the student visit the registrar’s office?

Approaching the Question
A Pay special attention to the beginning of the passage. This is generally where the main idea is stated.
However, be sure to consider all the information in the passage. Do not select answer choices that deal
with only part of the passage.
B Listen for frequently repeated words, or any idea that is repeated in different ways. Words or ideas that
occur frequently in the listening mostly likely have something to do with the main idea.
C Learn the incorrect answer choices. They are often ideas that are either too specific or too broad. The
correct answer is usually a restatement of what is said in the passage. Answer choices that use exact
words or phrases from the listening passage are often incorrect.
