Objective: Introduce division by grouping and relate it to multiplication After students have solved all the problems,
have them ask questions like the following.
A fact family is a group of related multiplication and division sentences. This will help them understand about a fact
family.
Look at the factors and products in the
two multiplication sentences; 3 4 12,
4 3 12 and find the common factor.
The two sentences are the same.
What other common factors can you see?
The numbers are the same although the order
of the factors is different.
What is the common factor in the two
division sentences; 12 4 3, 12 3 4?
They have the same dividend.
What is another common factor?
The 3 numbers are the same, but the order of
the numbers have been changed.
Find the common factor in the
4 multiplication and division sentences.
They used the same numbers (3, 4, 12) to
make the 4 sentences.
That’s right. In math, we call these
4 sentences a fact family. A fact family is a
group of related multiplication and division
sentences.
