To complete the number puzzles
successfully, students can try numbers for
one number sentence, and see if they can fill
in the remaining blanks according to that
first number sentence. If it doesn’t work,
they can try different numbers.

Example: How to solve question 1 using the method on the left.
Solution: 8 4 2, 8 2 4, 6 3 2, 6 2 3

In order to complete the puzzle, the quotient of the division sentence must be the same as the
first factor in the related multiplication sentence. Write the two related sentences, as shown
below. You cannot use the same numbers in the related sentences. Cross out the numbers you
cannot use as you are working to find the missing numbers.
Method 1: 8 4 2 and 2 3 6
Method 2: 6 3 2 and 2 4 8
Have students use the sentences from method 1 and 2 to find the correct answers.
Answer: You can complete the puzzle using both methods. The answer is the same as what you see in the
textbook.
