중요 용어의 의미 파악 문제는 지문에서 중요하게 다루어지는 용어의 의미를 이해하
는 문제 유형이다. 이를 위해서는 여러 문장, 또는 글 전체를 통해 해당 용어에 대한
정보를 얻어야 한다.
실제 iBT TOEFL에서 출제되는 문제 형식은 다음과 같다.

문제풀이 전략
A 글의 소재(topic)를 찾는다.
‘이 글이 무엇에 대한 것인가?’ 하는 질문을 스스로에게 던져 보자. 중요 용어는 글의 소재(topic)와 일치하거나,
직접적인 관련이 있다. 위의 예제에서 “ditching”은 곧 글의 소재이다. 글 전체가 “ditching”을 설명하고 있으
므로 글을 읽으면 자연히 그 의미를 파악할 수 있다. 정답은 “Not going to school and going somewhere
else”이다.
B 성급하게 답을 고르지 않고 한 번 더 생각한다.
글의 첫 부분만 읽고 성급하게 답을 고르지 않도록 한다. 후반부에 용어에 대한 중요한 정보가 나오기도 한다.
