Math Story + and -
The positive symbol, +, was first introduced in the 13th
century by an Italian mathematician, Leonardo Pisano.
Pisano used the Latin word et(and) as the symbol for
addition.
The negative symbol, _, was invented by a German
mathematician, Widmann, who published Rechenungauf allen
Kauffmannschaft in 1489. Widmann used the symbol ‘_’ to
replace ‘m’, which was the abbreviation for ‘minus’ at that time.
In the beginning, the symbols were simply used for abbreviations.
But in 1514, these symbols were used for positive, negative, addition, and
subtraction by a Dutch mathematician, Hoecke.
