General Microbiology & Immunology (PM 401) Second level Semester 4 2024/2025

                                 Cytoplasmic Membrane (plasma membrane)

                  • All cells have a cell membrane

                  • Membrane that encloses cytoplasm

                  • In prokaryotes & eukaryotes, the membranes are quite similar

                  Function
1- Controls what enters and exits the cell to maintain an internal balance (Regulate

                       cellular transport)

2- Provides protection and support for the cell

3- The cell membrane also plays a role in providing shape to the cell.

4- Specific proteins embedded in the cell membrane can act as molecular signals

that allow cells to communicate with each other.

5- Transport proteins allow cells to accumulate nutrients.
