2. Metabolic activity
- Products of microbial growth can be used to estimate the number of
microorganisms or, more commonly, to confirm their presence.
- This measures either:
o One of the products of metabolism, e.g acid in glucose fermentation
o the amount of substance used, e.g oxygen or enzyme, ATP
3. Total weight
• Either dry or wet weight
• The method is used to measure growth of filamentous organisms. These do
not readily separate into the individual cells necessary for a valid plate count
• Disadvantages: Tedious and time-consuming method
