Learning outcomes

• Identify safe laboratory practices when working in a microbiology lab

• Identify different equipment utilized in microbiology lab.
• Review the principles of light microscopy and identify the major parts of
the microscope.

Microbiology Lab Practices and Safety Rules

1- Listen to or read instructions carefully before attempting to do anything

2- Wash your hands with disinfectant soap when you arrive at the

lab and again before you leave

3- Wear gloves, a lab coat and safety glasses when working in the

microbiology lab

4- Avoid loose fitting items of clothing that could catch on
fire. Wear appropriate shoes (sandals are not allowed) in the laboratory

5- Long hair must be tied back in a ponytail; all hats
must be removed or turned backward.
