Thanks for Giving
to FedSERVES By Tiffany Alexander
Tiffany M. Alexander Tanenbaum Keale LLP Berwyn, PA
The inaugural year for the FedSERVES committee was an exciting success, despite the pandemic’s best efforts. With only one in-person meeting,
the momentum we gained at the outset could have been easily derailed. Instead, through the support of our Federation family, our efforts were met with more enthusiasm and generosity as time went on.
We rolled out our first project
in July 2020. For an entire year, members donated their tired, huddled masses of outdated and broken electronics to our virtual electronics drive. As a result of a 12-month virtual electronics drive, we were able to donate numerous electronics to People Advancing Reintegration Recycle Works, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the environment while creating transitional employment to people returning from prison.
In November, the FDCC’s Friday 5’s weekly newsletter unveiled FedSERVES’ next drive—a book drive for children of Veterans through the Philadelphia Veteran’s
Administration Hospital—and the response from our generous members was immediate and overwhelming. Word of the project spread rapidly through social media and with the help
of the Friday 5’s, and the FDCC far and wide responded. Even Federation family and friends got involved. Ed and Maddie Kaplan’s daughter, Elizabeth Frew, is the National Account Manager at Candlewick Press, and thanks to her, a case of books was donated. Bernie and Martha Heinze’s friend, Karen Baker, owns The Country Bookseller book shop
in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire,
and contributed generously
to this project. Lynne and Jon Ingram’s brother-in-law, Dan Schmidt, works for the Veteran’s Administration in Philadelphia, and was called upon to bring the VA’s large van to aid in delivery of the books because of the size of the donation. In early December, 537 children’s books were delivered
to the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Philadelphia, which were distributed to families through a holiday gift basket along with food pantry items. Thanks to this project and our members, hundreds
of children in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New
