REDESIGNING THE ICONIC SURF LIFESAVING CAP
The Surf lifesaving cap has an extreme amount of potential for improvement, as it should play the dual role of identifying patrolling members and skin protection. Currently it only fills one of these roles as it really has had no changes made to it since its origin in 1905 when the Surf Life Saver was first originated. The royal Life Saving Society originated in Britain where skin protection was unheard of and not necessary.

The SLSA is incredibly successful in recruiting members,in fact 3 out of 5 people in the beaches areas of Australia have some surf lifesaving skills or have or currently are part of a surf club, SLSA currently has over 173,000 members. This means that there are a vast number of people exposed to excessive amounts of dangerous UV rays whilst wearing the current patrol or nippers cap.
