Today, anyone over the age of 15 can qualify as a surf lifesaver. This means spending usually a minimum of 5 hours at the beach per patrol with the goal of protecting the public but who is protecting the skin of these volunteers against skin cancer, which is a major cause of death for Australians?
It has been argued that due to the hole in the ozone layer, Australians are at extreme risk of getting Melanoma Cancer compared to other countries. In fact,
Australia has the highest rate in the world of skin cancer across the globe with 33.6 people being diagnosed with skin cancer per 100 thousand people.
With the statistics on melanoma cancer cases rising,2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before the age of 70.
