Field Investigations
• Victim Interview
• Separate all subjects as soon as practical
• Chose a non-threatening location for interview if possible or
when appropriate contact your local CAC!
• Involve Victim’s Advocate when appropriate
• Don’t expect truthful statements initially
• Avoid appearing judgmental or condescending
• If you know you are not the right person for the interview,
draft someone who is
• MAKE SURE BASIC NEEDS ARE MET!

Interaction Techniques: OARS
• (O) Open Ended Questions: A question that cannot be
answered with a yes or no, that opens up a larger conversation.
• (A) Affirmations: Recognition of the client’s strengths,
• (R) Reflective Listening: Listen to the client and focus on
change talk. Reflect back to them what they have told you,
making connections between themes.
• (S) Summary: Announce that you are going to summarize, list
Punishers of what the clients that told you, and ask
selected element
them to make meaning of these things.
