IS THERE A GRANT FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

I have provided professional grant consulting, writing and training services through Heart Resources
LLC for the past 16 years. A frequently asked question at my website contact page is the most difficult
to answer: “Can you write a grant for my business?” Do not “ask Google” for a business grant-you’ll
find plenty of misinformation and ads promising access to “free grants” that are carefully disguised
scams or online schemes (misleading but not illegal). Also beware of large companies offering “grants
for women entrepreneurs” that are actually promotional prizes given by marketing departments. Grants
are designated for public benefit programs, services and research. Business owners are members of
the public and may be in need of assistance, however grants are most often awarded to nonprofits and
universities that provide services including helping individuals with business planning and development.
A business is defined as a profit-making venture, and our funds come from sales of products, contracted
services, credit, loans, angel investors, and even crowdfunding. I’ve been in the position of starting a
business with no upfront capital and always feel the painful reality of “no free grants” when explain-
ing it. Bootstrapping a new venture is doable: inventory your strengths, skills and assets; research the
market for your services; start small and test the waters; avoid too much debt; partner with others; and
set goals to gradually grow.
